Donatello’s David in His Golden Glory We all know Dontello’s David - now standing in the Bargello Museum, Florence. It was the first free standing nude created since antiquity and caused quite a sensation when he was first unveiled. He still does, with his feminine curves, beautiful body, and surprisingly sensual behind. They say he was cast from life, but all this is understandable as Donatello himself was openly homosexual - just like a number of other Renaissance men. What we see today, impressive as it is, is no where near as wonderful as what it was ment to be. After the restoration of the David in 2007 - 2009, a detailed analysis revealed that not only was his hair once gilded, but the feathers, Goliath’s beard and also parts of his boots were gilded to gleam. I made the investment in an eighteen euro, plastic David, bronzed him up, and gilded areas according to the findings of the recent restoration. I was shocked at the results. David truly looks like a demi-god, radiating, with his proud look of having just slain the Giant. This truly is how we were ment to see him, and what we have now, beautiful as it is, seems like just an echo of the magic it had. I wonder how other works would look if they we could see them restored? Imagine Michangelo’s David, with his golden skirt and gilded hair, towering above us. Wouldn’t that be impressive?
